What Does mold index mean?

Mold growth potential can be predicted by solving a numerical value called “Mold Index”. The calculated index number (0-600) determines the possibility of mold growth in the environment. As described on the table below, the higher the index number is, the higher is the possibility of mold growth.

While mold might not be visible to the naked eye when the index number is low, as the index number goes higher, also will the mold visibility to the naked eye and its damaging effects.

It needs to be noted that this mathematical equation is only a prediction model; Meaning the index number might not be reflecting the exact situation in the environment. Naturally, mold might have potentially grown more or less than what is anticipated and predicted through this index number. Thus, this model intends to only act as a cautionary note to attract the attention of the user to take the necessary preventive actions to stop mold growth, hence Mold Stop!

The credit of the basic scientific research goes to Tuomo Ojanen & Hannu Viitanen from the Technical Research Centre of Finland, who spent two decades of their lives on creating a mathematical model that can predict mold and then they publicized this knowledge on public domain for everyone to access. This model takes all the major players involved in mold growth into consideration. These players are relative humidity, temperature, and time. As a result, Mold Stop monitors and measures your environment’s temperature and relative humidity and will analyze these data against time to predict the potential of any mold growth.

The complexity regarding mold prediction is that it cannot be predicted by looking at a single number alone, but through analysing and monitoring the trend of events that would eventually leadup to mold growth. The graph below is an example of this very phenomena:

As shown on the graph (purple graph), “Mold Index” number can rise and fall continuously depending on the ambient conditions within the environment in consideration of time. Hence, it simply does not matter if the index number and its graph are on the rise. What matters is the trend of this rise. Below you will find another graph where the trend is on the rise:

In this graph, contrary to the previous one, you will find a rising trend of “Mold Index”. This environment is a lot more vulnerable to mold growth as the trend has been rising for a long period of time, whereas in the previous graph we saw that the index number had a constant trend of rise and fall over time which can eliminate the potential for the growth of any mold.

Mold Stop will first notify the user by sending an alarm when the index number reaches five (5). This is the first cautionary notification, to let the user know of the rising ambient conditions that are ideal for mold growth. However, as noted before, mold growth is more likely when this ambient condition is on a rising trend; Therefore, Mold Stop will continue notifying the user by sending email and text message alarms every time the “Mold Index” number increases by five (5). Be advised, upon receiving these notifications, even if mold is still not visible to your eye, it is recommended that you take precautionary actions to stop the increasing trend of “Mold Index” in order to eliminate the potential for any mold growth.
